M & D Mechanical Contractor's, Inc. recognizes that it is essential to our successful operation to prevent the occurrence of incidents that lead to occupational injuries and illnesses. All M&D employees are committed to the performance of our duties in a safe manner consistent with good construction practices.

Accidents occur because of either unsafe acts of people or unsafe conditions within the work area. M & D Mechanical Contractors, Inc. demands that OSHA regulations be observed and maintained as a minimum standard in all cases. Safety is never sacrificed for production.

Training
M & D Mechanical Contractor's, Inc. recognizes its obligation to train employees regarding the safety aspects of their jobs. This process is completed in different ways such as a structured initial orientation, tool box safety meetings, hazard communication training and other special training sessions.

All M&D employees are trained and oriented before starting work on a job site. The Tennessee Valley Training Center (TVTC, www.tvtc.org) is a not for profit organization employed by M & D to provide basic, initial safety training. Each employee is trained and certified in the following programs: Basic Orientation Plus and Basic Orientation Plus Refresher. Basic Orientation Plus is a half-day program. During this training, high quality instructors guide each employee through video-based, interactive, instructional units. Professionally produced video modules outline units which are carefully reviewed using computer based slides. All students are given a 50-question comprehensive written test. The questions cover all material presented but do not appear in the sequential order of the material. Tests are graded and reviewed. A minimum score of 80 is required.

The areas of training include:

  1. General Employee Safety
  2. Hazard Communication and Chemical safety
  3. Personal Protection Equipment
  4. Respiratory Protection
  5. Hearing Conservation Unit
  6. Electrical Safety for non-qualified workers
  7. Elevated Work Areas
  8. Process Safety Management
  9. General Rules and Emergency Response

Basic Orientation Plus Refresher is an annual training program that allows each employee to keep his or her safety training up to date. This program ensures that each M&D employee is continually provided with essential information that results in a continual awareness of the importance of working safely. Further, a number of additional training topics are covered on an as needed basis. These topics might include aerial lift certification, powered industrial truck certification, first aid and CPR training, OSHA 10 hr and OSHA 30 hr, hand safety, specific power tool training, confined space entry training, and other various OSHA mandated topics.

M & D Mechanical Contractor's, Inc. genuinely walks the walk when it comes to safety. A pro-active safety culture is nurtured and maintained, with some innovative safety incentive programs in place. The measurement tools normally used to rank a company among its industry peers prove that M & D has shown great success in our ultimate goal of an incident free work place.
